Before you start planning your next event, let me ask you this, “Why DO people attend events? Why will people attend YOUR event?”
Answering this question will help you better define the goal of your event and how to achieve it so that you throw an absolutely killer party. So let’s get real for a sec. Really, why do you go to parties? Weddings? Besides just plain feeling obligated to go (which we think is the WORST reason to go to an event), there are a number of great reasons! And when you have a good handle on those reasons, you’ll be able to always host events that will go down in the history books. Here are our top reasons:
People – no, I don’t mean the ever dreaded meaningless small talk. Real relationships people!! We were created for community, even those of us who are introverts, so connecting with friends and family on a meaningful level is the main reason most people attend events. Supporting those that are important in our lives, celebrating them, and having them there by our sides when we’re celebrating too! Your guest list should be chock full of people that are important in your life and make sure every guest will have someone to chat with, even if that means inviting them with a plus one.
Fun – ever been to that birthday bash and then couldn’t stop gushing about it to all your friends and coworkers and anyone that will listen? That’s because it was fun! Entertainment is key and that can be anything from a karaoke night birthday party, an unexpected acrobat at a wedding, simple lawn games, or just a creative food bar. I’m a huge fan of french fry, donut, s’mores and coffee bars where you get to create your own deliciousness! People need excitement, and that bit of punchy fun will give your event a personal and memorable touch. Stay tuned for a future blog post about different types of entertainment you can have at your event!
Food – who doesn’t love “free” food? I mean, I’m a diehard foodie, but when the word “free” gets thrown in that’s just icing on the cake! Having food at your event is an absolute must. Light crudités are fine, or a full-on six course meal too, but make sure your guests know approximately what to expect whether by the time of day the event happens or explicitly written on the invitation/website. We don’t want any hangry guests (no that’s not a typo, hungry + angry = hangry). It’s the best of all worlds when you can have a somewhat balanced spread too, like a mix of salty, savory, and sweet items!
Drinks – this also goes without saying. You don’t have to have a full bar (or even any alcohol) for your party to be off the hook. But people need to stay hydrated throughout your event, especially if you expect them to be dancing the night away and enjoying all that food. Signature cocktails are a really fun touch for any drink menu and if you’re going “virgin”, try signature mocktails instead! For tons of fun drink bar ideas check out this Pulse blog post and head to the Off Beat Bride for great mocktail recipes.
Education – this one doesn’t apply to every event, but it definitely applies to every person! Haven’t you gone to a conference or a non-profit function or a lecture, watched a documentary or even just a movie based on real events? Yeah, me too! People like to be informed, and also do NOT appreciate wasting time, so if you’re having an event where any part of it will be informative, make sure that part is delivered in a concise and eloquently informative manner. Ergo, apply the short and sweet/KISS (keep it simple stupid!) methods and you’ll be golden.
Now that you know the essentials, start planning your event and turn the above ideas into your own unique touches! I promise you this is the recipe to a successful and unforgettable party.
